February 10, 2026 • Fertilization & Weed Control
It might still look like winter outside, but February is actually the right time to start planning your lawn's spring program — especially if crabgrass or other early weeds have been a problem in past years. Wait until you see green grass to start thinking about it, and you'll have already missed the best window for the most important step.
Pre-emergent crabgrass control has to go down before crabgrass seeds germinate, which in the Peoria area typically starts once soil temperatures hit the mid-50s — often in early-to-mid April, sometimes sooner in a warm spring. Pre-emergent applied even a couple weeks too late does almost nothing, because it works by preventing germination, not by killing weeds that have already sprouted. Getting a program scheduled in February or March means the timing is planned instead of rushed.
With no active growth to distract from it, late winter is actually a clear time to look at where a lawn struggled the previous year — thin spots, drainage issues, compacted areas, or spots that always seem to get more weeds than the rest of the yard. Planning a program around those specific problem areas, rather than a generic one-size-fits-all schedule, gets better results.
Once the weather turns in spring, everyone wants service at once, and lawn care companies book up fast during that first warm stretch. Getting on the schedule in February or March means your property is already in rotation when the season's most time-sensitive treatments need to go down, instead of waiting for an opening.
The best spring lawn results start with a plan made before spring actually arrives — particularly for crabgrass control, where timing is everything.
