June 16, 2026 • Mosquito, Flea & Tick Control
Mosquito season in the Peoria area typically runs from May through the first frost in October, with activity peaking in the humid stretch of June through August. If you've noticed more bites in the evenings the last few weeks, you're not imagining it — and there's a lot you can do about it beyond citronella candles.
Mosquitoes need standing water to breed, and it takes as little as a bottle cap's worth for them to lay eggs. Clogged gutters, birdbaths, kiddie pools, tarps, low spots in the yard that hold water after rain, even saucers under potted plants are all breeding sites. Walking the property after a rain and dumping anything holding water is genuinely one of the most effective things a homeowner can do, and it's free.
Adult mosquitoes rest in shaded, humid vegetation during the day — think dense shrubs, tall grass, ivy, and the underside of deck structures. Keeping grass mowed to a reasonable height and trimming back overgrown shrub lines removes a lot of that daytime shelter, which is part of why a well-maintained yard tends to have noticeably fewer mosquitoes than a neglected one next door.
Barrier treatments applied to vegetation, shaded areas, and other resting spots knock down the adult population and keep knocking it down on a repeat schedule through the season, which is the piece most DIY approaches miss — a one-time spray or a citronella candle doesn't touch mosquitoes breeding two yards over that fly in on the wind. A season-long program timed to the Central Illinois mosquito calendar (roughly every 3-4 weeks from May through September) keeps populations down consistently instead of just reacting after a bad week.
Between clearing standing water, keeping vegetation trimmed back, and a repeat treatment schedule through the season, most yards can get mosquito activity down to a manageable level well before your next cookout.
